Marathi is spoken by around 8.4 crore peoples around the globle. In India, Mararthi is official langaugge of Maharashtra state, and co-official language of Goa. Marathi ranks 10th in the list of most spoken languages in the world. Marathi Day is celebrated on 27 February, the birthday of the poet Kusumagraj (Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar).
It is spoken primarily in the Indian state of Maharashtra (where it is the official language of the state), but is also spoken in Israel and Mauritius
Marathi developed from Sanskrit and, thus, is closely related to Hindi and Punjabi. First records of Marathi date back to the 11th century
